A digression is necessary here:
I'm married to an Indian citizen. Like, a grew-up-in-India, came to the states for college sort of non-American. Aditya mostly passes as American-born now, since he's been here for all of his adult life - and he's probably going to be getting US citizenship this year if he ever fills out the damn paperwork - but he identifies very strongly as Indian.
There are a million and one awesome things about being married to someone from a different country & culture. For example, his parents are going to be coming for a visit from India next week, and I'll get to eat delish home-style Indian food everyday because his parents like to cook. (There are also downsides - for example, his parents will be visiting us for six months.)
But, anyways, one of the awesome things that is on my mind today is the cross-pollination of media that occurs when you have two people from two different cultures living together. Bollywood has a very strong presence in our household, and A.R. Rahman's music features heavily on my iPod. And, in turn, I share all of the American television shows that Aditya never got to see, having grown up in India without a television for most of his childhood.
There's nothing better than rewatching one of your favorite shows with someone completely new to it - and that's Aditya for all of the shows I watched growing up. Aaron Sorkin's short-lived Sports Night is what we're currently working our way through and the boy simply adores it. After watching the second episode he turned to me and, with real pain in his voice, asked why I had been hiding this from him for seven years. Which leads us into my favorite female supporting character (see, there was a point to the digression) - because I probably wouldn't have remembered this character without the rewatch we're doing, but, man, I love her. (And this show. There really isn't a bad episode in all two seasons - and many are close to perfection.)
Favorite Female Characters
Oh, Natalie. You're Dana's kickass second-in-command and also her best friend and support. You know what needs to be done before Dana, Casey, or Dan can even mention it, and you'll give them shit if that's what the situation calls for. You can run the show if needed, though, AND make the right editorial calls when doing so. You get one of the best geek guy ever, and you two are adorable together. You're not afraid of taking heat and criticism to do the right thing, either. You're wrong sometimes, but you're willing to face up to that and get your act together. I totally want to be your BFF.
