jactrades: Kirk and McCoy's profiles (ST - Kirk/McCoy)
Title: Riverside, Iowa
Author: [livejournal.com profile] jactrades
Written for: [livejournal.com profile] space_wrapped 2011
Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Characters/Pairing: Kirk/McCoy, Sulu-POV
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 for language & zombies
Wordcount: ~2,800
Summary: Sulu didn't think it was that big a deal, volunteering to jump deep into zombie territory. McCoy was a bit more vocal on the whole "parachuting in" part.
Notes: Zombie AU/fusion with the novel World War Z. If you haven't read the book, the only thing to note is that it's structured as a series of short interviews commissioned by the U.N. after humanity's hard-won victory in WWZ. I strayed pretty far from the prompt, and, um, the holiday spirit, but there are zombies in December and McCoy gets a pretty awesome present at the end.

   Riverside, Iowa, USA

As I park my car on the west side of the town square I’m struck by the sense of prosperity that Riverside emanates. Beds of flowers line the walkway as I cross the green, narrowly avoiding a trio of children splashing each other by the center fountain. The famous series of walls guarding the city center are visible, of course, and the standard fail-safes – many of which were invented within these very walls – can be found tucked unobtrusively into corners, but the overall feeling is one of pre-war normalcy. I am not sure what I expected from Riverside, the largest of the civilian-run blue zones to survive east of the Rockies, but this isn’t it. A Ms. Rand meets me as I enter the unassuming building that serves as the town’s city hall. She escorts me politely to a small conference room where I meet Hikaru Sulu. )

The lake reminded him of Tahoe. No conifers, of course, and this planet’s sun beat down too hot for snow to exist anywhere outside of the poles, but the resemblance was there all the same – that shimmering depth stretching out around the mountains. )
