:D Late response is late, but I've been randomly remembering this comment and smiling all week!
So, I put Pride is a Lonely Blanket in there just because it seemed so perfectly broken for what's happening in most of Part 5 of your fic - there's both Jim's difficulties and there's also the crew's feelings of uncertainty and not knowing how to handle or what to say about the things they've learned on Tarsus. And from a musical/instrumental perspective, it kept up the vaguely country/Americana sound that Mumford & Sons (yeah, I know, English band, but still, banjos) & Drifting have, so things hang together.
Drifting - I never thought of it in relation to Firefly, but you're right that it does have that vibe. :) I put it in there to signal the shift to After-Tarsus and because it has a sort of jaunty introspective feel to it - it's not trumpets blazing, but it does have more positive notes than the earlier songs.
Problem of Pain was the song I waffled on the most, actually - I knew I wanted something between Drifting and The Book of Revelation, but I couldn't quite find the right song for the longest time. I eventually went with this song because I think it carries on the uncertainty/uneasy feel that comes from Pride is a Lonely Blanket, but is musically a little more upbeat with the background vocals and light strumming. And the line "Icarus they caught you where you tumbled on/Encourage you to dive now the sun is gone" really feels like an encapsulation of Starfleet/Pike's perspective on Jim.
For me, The Book of Revelation is completely Jim & Bone's song, although the verses trade-off between the two. I guess it's just that "I love you" that Bones finally admits; it feels like, with that - and Tarsus - out in the open, their relationship really has a chance to go somewhere. And then Sea of Teeth is there to slow things down just a little bit as the Enterprise heads back to Tarsus - things still aren't completely out of the woods.
I'm With You is all about Jim & his crew - I think you got it perfectly. :D And with that final jump that everyone makes in trusting and helping Jim, I feel like the story moves into a happier place, so the final three songs reflect that, mood-wise. All or Nothing continues that mood, and, as you said, is about Jim finally at peace with his history on Tarsus... well, that and Welcome Home. Welcome Home was probably my best serendipitous find for this mix; I'd listened to the song a few times before, but only knew the general feel & lyrics to the chorus. Then I listened to it again when it came up randomly after I'd read you story and it was just perfect for the mood I wanted to leave the mix off on, both from a sound perspective & lyrical.
As I said before, I am so, so glad that this mix worked for you and that you like it so much. I'm rather inordinately fond of it as well. :D
I've thought about it, but I wasn't sure what their policy was regarding mixes linked to fics... But I suppose I might as well try posting it there!
