Fic: Riverside, Iowa

Title: Riverside, Iowa
Author: [livejournal.com profile] jactrades
Written for: [livejournal.com profile] space_wrapped 2011
Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Characters/Pairing: Kirk/McCoy, Sulu-POV
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 for language & zombies
Wordcount: ~2,800
Summary: Sulu didn't think it was that big a deal, volunteering to jump deep into zombie territory. McCoy was a bit more vocal on the whole "parachuting in" part.
Notes: Zombie AU/fusion with the novel World War Z. If you haven't read the book, the only thing to note is that it's structured as a series of short interviews commissioned by the U.N. after humanity's hard-won victory in WWZ. I strayed pretty far from the prompt, and, um, the holiday spirit, but there are zombies in December and McCoy gets a pretty awesome present at the end.

   Riverside, Iowa, USA

As I park my car on the west side of the town square I’m struck by the sense of prosperity that Riverside emanates. Beds of flowers line the walkway as I cross the green, narrowly avoiding a trio of children splashing each other by the center fountain. The famous series of walls guarding the city center are visible, of course, and the standard fail-safes – many of which were invented within these very walls – can be found tucked unobtrusively into corners, but the overall feeling is one of pre-war normalcy. I am not sure what I expected from Riverside, the largest of the civilian-run blue zones to survive east of the Rockies, but this isn’t it. A Ms. Rand meets me as I enter the unassuming building that serves as the town’s city hall. She escorts me politely to a small conference room where I meet Hikaru Sulu. )

Fanmix: The Once & Future Captain (Kirk, Kirk/McCoy for STBB)

When I saw the summaries of the STBB fics, I crossed my fingers in the hopes of getting [livejournal.com profile] turtle_goose's The Once & Future Captain because I've had thoughts about mixing a Tarsus fic (mostly centered around track 12). Lucky me, I got the chance to create a mix for this story! :D I really enjoyed the clear thought that went into the world-building in this story, and if you're a sucker for Tarsus fics (like me), you shouldn't pass this one up.

Masterpost for the fic & gorgeous art here!

Onward to the mix! )

Dear Yuletide Author

Hello Unknown Author!

First off, thank you for writing for me! I absolutely adore all of the fandoms I requested, so I'm sure that I'll adore anything you write for me in them. And yay! you like at least one of them as well, so I'm doublely sure anything you write will be awesome. Please consider all of my preferences/suggestions/prompts below as optional, and don't sweat it if your inspiration takes you elsewhere. I'd MUCH rather read something you loved writing than something you wrote under duress after having a wtf moment at my prompts. Seriously, I'll be happy with whatever you send my way! :-)

Art: Start Infinity Again (Kirk Prime/Spock Primefor STBB)

You guys, I am so excited to finally be able to post about this story! Somewhat excited to post my art, but mostly I'm just excited that I can finally say YOU SHOULD GO READ [livejournal.com profile] rynne's KIRK PRIME/SPOCK PRIME REBOOT FIC!

Looks like a much more standard fairy tale story than we've seen from Pixar before, but yay! for a female hero for once and for those accents. And the hair.

Fanmix: The Stratos Bride (Droxine/Vanna, Kirk/Spock for STBB)

Where do I even start with the brilliant story that inspired this mix?

Look, it'd be an awesome fic if it were just an AOS version of The Cloud Minders, but [livejournal.com profile] rainbowstrlght takes the TOS episode and revamps it perfectly using the story of The Princess Bride. There's endless questions and asides from a stuck-in-Sickbay Joanna as the story unfolds, there's Spock as one of the storytellers (hilarious), there's Jim getting his ass kicked by the Dread Pirate, there's political shenanigans a plenty, and, of course, there are Rodents of Unusual Size.

So, yeah, check out the masterpost here for links to the fic and art!

Five good things today

1. It's Friday.

2. It's Friday. Trust me, this really deserves two points this week.

3. Pumpkin Buttered Rum. Hot dark rum, with a bit of spiced pumpkin butter & brown sugar stirred in? Why, yes, I'll have a bowlful, please.

4. Most everything is packed up and ready for the move tomorrow. We're hiring professional movers for the first time ever - EXCITING! I look forward to sipping my pumpkin buttered rum on the wood floor while they carry the couch in. (Rule #82 of moving - always prominently label the box with the alcohol.)

5. Hot Daily did a TWO PART picspam of sexy in space this week, and goddamn, they covered just about everyone I've ever lusted after or currently lust after on television. Farscape! Star Wars (original and prequel)! Vintage SF! Battlestar Galactica! Firefly! All the Dr. Who! Star Trek! EVEN MOAR STAR TREK!

Serious mood-lifter, guys, go check it out.

Fic: Jumping Into Puddles

Title: Jumping Into Puddles
Author: [livejournal.com profile] jactrades
Written for: [livejournal.com profile] maypirate's Halloween treat
Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Characters/Pairing: Kirk/Sulu
Rating/Warnings: PG for language
Wordcount: ~1,500
Summary: "Hire the best people you can find," they say. "You'll sleep better at night," they say. Modern day AU with Kirk at the head of a startup. Yeah.
Notes: Partially inspired by [livejournal.com profile] maypirate's very old prompt from [livejournal.com profile] old_blueeyes's Second Sulu-Off, found here, and partially by the GQMF at the end.

The mistake, actually, was in agreeing with anything McKenna suggested. That’s the line Jim’s going with when Hikaru asks. )

Who just majored in marine biology, if you know what I mean.

No pictures of my costume this morning, since I couldn't find my eye patch before work, so here's one of my coworker's cute dog:

I walked into the kitchen to discover a wizard explaining his theory about how all things magical end up in Albania to the head of the SF office, who is a proper pirate. I do enjoy my coworkers.

In other news, moving plans have kicked into high gear:
1. We had an open house on Sunday at the place we're currently renting for new potential tenants - our landlords are really great, and we know how it is from the other side, so it was the least we could do to help them find new renters. The dogs managed to contain themselves to just joyously greeting all of the new folks coming through. Panda, of course, got himself chased by a two-year-old screaming, "Doggie, doggie, hi doggie!"

2. We started packing. One room 80% done, a thousand boxes to go.

3. We met our new roommate! He seems like a really nice guy - just turned 30, somewhat geeky (ComicCon & BlizzCon sort of geek), and apparently cooks a mean Thai dish. I think we'll all work out well. *crosses fingers*

Oh, and from [livejournal.com profile] thistlerose

In honor of All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting trick-or-treaters to my 'door'.

Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and I'll give you a treat. Treats can be anything that strikes my fancy (pics of fave actors or pairings, one sentence fics, graphics, a few words why I'm glad to have you on my flist, etc. etc.). The more "houses" to visit the more fun it'll be, so go ahead, open your journal and help spread the fun!

Fanmix: The Long Game (Kirk/Spock for STBB)

When I realized I'd be making a mix for [livejournal.com profile] striped_fic/waketosleep's STBB fic, Big Me (But It's You I Fell Into), I nearly squealed out loud in my living room, because that meant I'd be getting to read the story before y'all and that, folks, is exciting. And then I did squeal when I got my hands on the rough draft and realized that Happy Gilmore could probably be blamed for half of it.

This story did not disappoint.  It is hilarious and FUN, with a core of sweetness balanced with an unhealthy amount of swearing. READ IT!

You don't need to be a Kirk/Spock shipper to enjoy it - the whole supporting cast is equally fantastic as the pairing (Winona & Bones especially). You don't need to know anything about golf, either - all I know about the sport is from Happy Gilmore and the minigolf range - which, incidentally, is about as much knowledge as Jim starts out with here too. :-D

Anyway, yeah, I loved the story, and I hope my mix, The Long Game, (which is generally redic, btw) is half as fun.

Not procrastinating at all

It's Friday, have a question meme!

1. Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed?
They remain in a state of permanent "however the last entity to access the closets left them" - i.e. I close them, unless there's a suitcase or pile of clothes resting on the floor of the closet in the way, Abhi leaves them open unless the dogs have been making dog-nests out of the pile of clothes (in which case he nudges the clothes in enough to shut the closet doors). Because he's heartless like that.

The dogs push the doors open with their noses if there's a crack so they can sleep on our clothes.

We're all adults here, and this isn't at all an indicator for how the rest of this meme shall go.

Why, lyricists, why?

Quick question for the masses out there:

Would it throw you off in a fanmix created for a m/m ship if one of the songs referenced a woman in the lyrics? The song I've got is perfect - except that the male singer mentions that his love is a woman. It's not quite as bad as, say, American Woman, but it is clearly stated.

*shakes fist* More gender-neutral awesome love songs, musicians.

General Mix - Marathon Mashup Vol 1

In my on-going effort to introduce my BFF to awesome running music, I ended up compiling four and a half hours of mashups. I'd say I'm sorry... but, actually? I'm really, really not. Mashup music isn't a guilty pleasure of mine - how can you feel guilty for enjoying music which is so in-your-face HAPPY? It's all about celebrating music of all sorts, from the craziest, latest pop to old classic rock or jazz.

Some of the best nights of my life have been spent dancing to this stuff with a bunch of strangers just out to have a great time.(Thank You Bootie SF!) So the following three mixes have been created to spread the joy that is mashup culture - exercise to them, dance to them, or just listen to them for the craziness that is a Mozart/hip-hop blend or Bollywood + Metallica done perfect.

Links to the posts for Volume 2 & Volume 3 at the end, or you can go here to see all my running mixes.

dog paddling my way through life.

Oh, gosh, I don't even know how to recap everything that has happened since I was last here. So, numbered list.

1. We're moving. We're moving? (Apparently, we're moving. (Whee?))

I actually absolutely adore the house we're renting out right now (three fruit trees, nice yard for the dogs, LOTS of windows and sunshine), but my commute is a hellish ~3 hours round trip, so we're moving up to SF proper. Abhi'll have ~40 minutes each way on the freeway, but he loves to drive (weirdo) and he can commute with coworkers who live in the city, if he likes. I'll be doing the walk-subway-walk thing, about 30 minutes each way, which is fine and dandy.

The house we're moving to is ALSO absolutely adorable, and I think I'll end up liking it there, but it's happening fast, so I'm still all, "erm, what?" We saw the place on Craigslist last Thursday, went to the open house Saturday, put in our applications that night, and are signing the lease tomorrow. Which means a trip to the bank today, because between first month's rent, last month's rent, regular deposit, AND pet deposit we're looking at over $11k in upfront costs. O.o I know. Oy vey, San Francisco, I love you as a city, and I love living here, but you're ridiculously priced, and Google & Facebook's hiring sprees are not helping. (Also, dogs, you with your needs for a yard and a pet-friendly living space, you are the ultimate luxury good. I hope you're satisfied with yourselves.)

I'll miss South Bay's sunshine. Also, we need to get a roommate to help with costs (clearly), and I'm slightly leery, but mostly hopeful? Do any of you know a cool someone in SF looking for a room? We're really nice folks, and we have the cutest dogs ever:
together, they outweigh me by a good bit )
2. (How is this only two?) I, um, have a job interview tomorrow. IT IS ALSO VERY SUDDEN AND I AM NOT PREPARED! I applied on Friday, they emailed me on Monday, and since I currently work two blocks from their office, we're just jumping straight to the in-person interview. It's an analyst position at a small non-profit advocacy group in the energy field, and I'm really excited about it. But I'm trying not to jinx it all by getting too excited, you know? The job was sent to me by a coworker who thought it'd be a good fit - all of the mid-level staff in my group are trying to jump ship asap, so we're all searching out jobs & emailing them around to each other late at night - when we're still in the office. Anyway, I'll be studying all of tonight for this interview. And trying to decide what to wear. *crosses fingers*

3. We went on a vacation road trip to the Pacific NW, and it was absolutely fantastic. I think the best moment for me (other than seeing both sets of grandparents) was stepping into the redwood forest and just taking a deep breath. My first strong memory is of playing tag in the redwood forest that my preschool was located in, and that scent just brought all of that "home" feeling back. Crater Lake was the favorite of Abhi's & his parents, unsurprisingly - it's absolutely magnificent, and a must see if you're ever in Oregon. (Oh, and we spent one night in the village of Ferndale CA, which was a vague inspiration for the town of Enterprise in [livejournal.com profile] seren_ccd's fantastic Chapel/McCoy fic Take Off Your Kid Gloves. If you haven't read it, you really ought, because it's everything fun PLUS there's some wickedly delightful McCoy imagery.)

And then we came home and all of the work I'd left for a week was still waiting to get done. *headdesk*

4. Fandom! I have lots on my to-do list:*shakes head8 )
5. We're going back to the east coast next weekend for one of our best friend's wedding. Flying into DC, where I'll be able to work out of my company's HQ for a couple of days (maybe give my 2 weeks notice? eeeeek! *crosses fingers again*), then driving up to NYC. Again, I think it'll be great time, but, man, the timing could not be worse in terms of our finances and general life busyness.

6. I have some more running/exercise/energetic mixes to post! I've actually had them ready to go for a few days, but I didn't want to overwhelm anyone with even more music last week.

7. In my spare moments (hah.) I've been reading through the archives at Mark Watches, which I found out about via [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets, oddly enough. His enthusiasm is infectious, and now I really want to rewatch BSG & Avatar. And Firefly. And go search out fics in those fandoms, maybe.
